| Disputed Kokoda Track section not used by diggers: expert
But an expert on the Track has told ABC1's Foreign Correspondent program the Australian proposal is ill conceived because the relevant section of the track - a southern stretch about 600 metres long - was not used during the war. Soc Kienzle, who grew up on the track and whose father, Bert Kienzle, helped map it, has surveyed the track by helicopter and on foot. He says there is doubt that the section of the current track which might be mined has war heritage value. "The trekkers come along here, they're moving along the main track when they deviate off onto this side track, which is of no historical consequence for Australia or Papua New Guinea, and from that point they looked down on the mine," he said. "Now as far as I'm concerned, this area down here is irrelevant." Mr Kienzle says the current problem stems from maps drawn up in the late 1970s by Papua New Guinea surveyors.

General Motors Corp. and Daimler AG unveiled plans for lithium-ion hybrids as automakers push to overcome difficulties with a technology that promises to drive hybrid autos to the next level of performance. Daimler AG will be the first to get to market, disclosing its intention to introduce a hybrid version in 2009 of its Mercedes-Benz flagship S-class luxury sedan using a gasoline engine and a lithium-ion power source. GM said it expects to bring its first lithium-ion battery powered hybrid engine system to market in North America sometime in 2010. No products have been revealed, but officials said the technology had potential across a broad range of models. (AP) .

We've rented cottages four times in Devon, England's southwestern county noted for clotted cream, gorgeous countryside, famous seafarers such as Drake and Raleigh, and now local organic foods. One cottage was a thatched, 13th century granite farmhouse on the edge of Dartmoor National Park; two were in Chagford, a village surrounded by wonderful hiking country and small shops supplying high-quality foods. Our most recent stay in April was in an 18th century thatched cottage in Budleigh Salterton, a small seaside town on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site. All the cottages have gardens and are well equipped and comfortable. Chagford is a lively village with a 14th century church. Most traffic is on foot, and you're as likely to hear horses clopping down the street as automobiles.
