Washington diary: Clinton ploughs on

As the icy wind howled outside and downtown Cleveland began to look like the Kingdom of Narnia, the bar-stool pundits at the Marriott hotel were at a loss.

The midnight hour was approaching.

They had been looking forward to closure from the Democrats; they had spit-polished their political obituaries of Hillary Clinton; they were preparing to shed tears of defeat or joy and yearning for liberation from the marathon of instant analysis, number crunching and fickle opinions that had, quite frankly, exhausted them.

"Enough already! Let's rest, recover and reboot for the really big campaign in the summer."

Until the voters of Ohio and Texas spoiled it all by breathing new life into Hillary's campaign.

After two months of gorging themselves on more politics than they could ever have imagined, the bar-stool pundits were beginning to feel like hostages at an eat-all-you-can buffet.

McCain Defends His Tanker Deal Inquiries

Airbus objected to the provision and asked the Pentagon to drop it in June 2006.

McCain, in his letter to Gates on Dec. 1, 2006, said the proposed bid request "may risk eliminating competition before bids are submitted." The Air Force changed the criteria four days later.

Dicks, a senior member of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, said the removal of the subsidy language was a "game-changer" that favored EADS over Boeing.

EADS also wanted the Pentagon to factor into the bidding process the ability of the new tanker to carry cargo and passengers. The Airbus proposal called for a much bigger plane than the 767 offered by Boeing.

In his letter to Gates, McCain urged the Pentagon to write bid requests that would take into account the various capabilities of the tanker plane.

Highland's hard-working hurdler

Callie Davis didn't see a hurdle until the seventh grade. When her junior high coach suggested she try it because hardly anybody wanted to try, she thought, "Why not" Now, as a junior at Highland High, she carries her own two hurdles around, and not only clears them with grace, but beats the opposition with strong finishes, especially in the 300 meters. Davis, without competing in a club track and field program, started the season with a victory in the 300 hurdles at the Aztec Invitational at Tempe Corona del Sol. She was fifth in the 100 hurdles. .
