A question of security

As a letter below in "Your Views" clearly indicates, the issue of "waterboarding" — that interrogation technique in which drowning is simulated — still hangs fire.

That said, we pose these two questions. First, would you want to be waterboarded? The answer would be, "Of course not. What do you think I am, a masochist?"

But suppose the question was posed this way: If your child’s life hung in the balance, and a captured, er ah, "detained" terrorist had information that could prompt his or her safe release, would you want him to be waterboarded? Again, we believe, the answer would be obvious.

Therein lies the crux of this issue. This is no simple matter of "Do unto others . . ." It comes down to a willingness to do whatever is necessary, within right reason, to protect this nation and its citizens.

B.C.’s Okanagan Valley good place to practice skiing on powder

Okanagan Valley, B.C. – Looking down between the tips of my skis at a double-diamond run called Make My Day, I can't help but think "this is what ski road trips are all about." Driving 400 miles, braving sketchy mountain roads in an SUV with questionable brakes, just to stand atop a run that's not only new to me but interesting.

And Make My Day is definitely interesting. It's so dirty and so hairy that Apex Mountain Resort sold "I skied Make My Day" shirts until it cut new runs nearby that were just as steep and bumpy.

I dropped in and was on my way to living the American ski bum dream – the ski road trip.

I'm not talking about throwing the family in the car for a weekend of skiing at Whistler or Sun Valley. My plan was to ski five British Columbia ski areas in four days.
